Deafen 19:14

about

Deafen, the debut solo release from composer/improviser/producer Jason Koth is one bold musical statement. Consisting entirely of alto saxophone and electronics, the project blends warm, reverberant ambience with a lo-fi sensibility. Lush layers of overdubbed chords contrast with desert-like minimalism to make a sonic experience that is as calming as it is unsettling.

The centerpiece of the album is the closing title track, a nineteen minute minimalist wash consisting of a saxophone running through various pitch shifters, alternating between only three pitches. A piece stripped of variance almost entirely, it stretches the perception of time, almost to a halt.

On the whole, Deafen is a subtle exploration of patience and imperfection. And it's so quiet you might just miss it.
